Understanding Internet Privacy

Internet privacy raises many issues, such as the capability to control what information to reveals about oneself over the Internet, and to control who can access that information. Internet privacy forms a subset of computer privacy.

Here is what the Microsoft Corp. (February 2007) has to say on the subject of computing and internet privacy:

Global trends indicate a steady increase in crimes like identity theft as well as online phishing scams aimed at deceiving individuals into divulging their personal information. At the same time, studies worldwide show a decline in confidence that information shared online will remain both secure and private. In light of these developments, as well as an increasingly rigorous regulatory environment and the growing volume of personal information being collected by businesses and government, private and public sector organizations are beginning to understand that managing and helping protect people’s confidential data must be a top priority.

I have just created a small informational website: www.privacy-internet.org as a guide to Internet and computing privacy. On this site you will discover what internet privacy is, look at the major milestones in the history of computer privacy understand the the risks web users face in an international ecommerce environment to finally conclude with a review of several tools which could potentially improve privacy on the Internet.
